the 2011 Geophysics Division Student Award Competition Results
at the Ottawa 2011 meeting
May, 2011

The 2011 winner of the GAC Geophysics Division Student Award is:

Best geophysical oral or poster presentation: Cedrick O'Shaughnessy, Ph.D. candidate at the McGill University, on the topic "The failure of silicate foams caused by bubble expansion: Investigation by X-ray microtomography," with Ph.D. supervisor, Dr. Don Baker. Cedrick received a $300 cash prize and a mounted certificate.

Kyle Harris, Carleton University -poster presentation, "Spatio-temporal characterization of the density of waste in a bioreactor landfill via microgravity surveys."

Victoria Tschirhart, McMaster University -oral presentation, "3D geophysical inversions of the northeast Amer Belt and their relationship to geologic structure."

Eight judges volunteered to assess the 21 eligible student presentations at the Ottawa meeting. Congratulations to the judges for a job well done!

The award for the "best student geophysical paper" at the annual Geological Association of Canada meeting is to be made to the student who presents a paper (oral or poster) that is judged to be best.

The requirements:

The student must have used geophysical methods as the prime research tool(s),

The research has or will form part of the student's Bachelor's, Master's or Doctoral research dissertation,

The student must have been supervised and sponsored for the award by a member of the Geophysics Division of the GAC, or the student is nominated by a GAC-Geophysics Division member,

The student is the first author on the abstract.

All graduate students may participate every year.
